Interview at US Embassy Islamabad for Student Visa

This experience is of one of my friend that i m posting here.
-----------------------------------------------

I attended my visa interview in USA embassy on 1'st December 2006 and got through.

Here is the process I followed for F1.
* Of course I applied in the USA University. They gave me acceptance letter and financial aid award letter.
* I studied this link http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1268.html
* I submitted SEVIS I-901 fee on https://www.fmjfee.com/index.jhtml through credit card. I gave 130$, but I recommend you guys to submit only 100$. Don't forget to take printout at the end; this printout is enough for visa officer.

* I filled DS-156 form from the link https://evisaforms.state.gov/ds156.asp When you click on continue button you will get a pdf, save it and get a printout of it.

* I submitted my passport, signed copy of my I-20 form, printed version of DS-156 form, plus they give me 2 or 3 additional form to fill (they contain detail information of applicant family and job detail). Also I paid 7100 rupees.

* After 7 or 8 days I got my documents back. I got walk in interview any day from Monday to Friday between 8am to 10am.
* I got file having 40 plastic papers from market. I placed my documents in order. I-20, Letters from the university, my bank statements (I was sponsoring my self), affidavit from my parents, my parents bank statements and real estate documents, my certifications, national level price, other academic achievements and transcripts from all educational institutes I have attended. (its better if you tag them, but at least you should remember the order so that you may not shuffle between  pages during interview)
* I appeared in interview in 1^st December 2006 and here is the detail.

I reached one day before my interview and stayed in a hotel.

I reached Convention Centre at almost 7:10am (I recommend you people to reach at 6:30am). Almost 70 to 80 people were in the line already when I reached. It took almost 20 minutes for my turn and I got ticket (cost 30 rupees). Then I submitted my mobile in another counter (cost 5 rupees).
Then I entered in another line to get the bus. Almost 10 people were already there in that line. I waited almost 15 minutes for the bus. This bus took me to US embassy.
When I reached there I saw two lines for immigrants and non-immigrants. I entered in non-immigrant line. This line is for security check. I got my turn in almost 10 minutes.

Then again I was said to enter in another queue it was filled with almost 35/40 non-immigrant applicants. I got my turn after almost 50 minutes. Guard checked documents which American Express gave to me. A guy in front of me was sent back, he forgot his receipt which we get from American Express. I entered in USA Embassy finally.

I was told to place all my documents and metal things (even my belt) in a basket. I and that basket were scanned and I got my belongings back in 10 seconds.
After that I entered in another queue (this time there were chairs to sit). After almost 15 minutes guard asked 15 candidates to enter into the hall. When entered into the hall there was another queueJ. This queue is to give index finger impression. Almost 15 candidates were already there and it took 20 to 25 minutes for my turn. Officer took my
documents  (exactly those which American Embassy returned me). Then he said place your left index finger for impression and then your right index finger for impression. And then I was told to sit and wait for my turn.
Little nervous... At this time I did a mistake ... the guy sitting next to me was a candidate for visit visa. (after 6 minutes wait) I told him that if my name is called request visa officer that I am in washroom and will be back in 2 or 3 minutes (I though that guy is waiting for half an hour before me and most probably I will get call after him so I can go to washroom). I went to washroom and as I opened the door I heard "Ijaz Sarwar on window nine" …….. ohhhh shit ……
I turned back …. Before me that guy reached counter to say sorry and then I arrived ….. I was totally stuck at that point …. Well it took one minute to explain what happened …. But she (visa officer) was very angry with me and I think I did not explain her correctly.

Any how by the grace of God my interview started ….
No good mornings …(she looks angry throughout the interview)

VO: Can I see your form?
ME: I-20?
VO: Yes
ME: Gave it
VO: (studied my I-20 in detail) Can I see your acceptance letter from university.
ME: Yes sure (gave it).
VO: Your letter of financial award.
ME: Yes sure (gave financial award letter from university).
ME: I can't hear you correctly. (there was lot of interruptions in her voice, I just get one or two words and guess the question)
VO: (she looks very rude… no reply from her … she keep typing)
VO: Give me your bank statement.
ME: (gave detailed statement of my two accounts, she just checked the end balance and gave me back) In case of emergency my parent will be supporting me. (she did not asked financial documents of my parents and keep typing)
VO: Why you are going to USA.
ME: To do Maters in Computer Science.
VO: Why you selected this university:
ME: They are offering financial aid and I just have to pay 80% of the amount. They are offering good programming courses and plus they have block structure in which we study only one course at a time and can give full focus on that particular subject.

VO: Ok, I am approving your visa but we need some additional processing and that will take 6 to 8 weeks. (She got a page and wrote my passport number on that and gave me that page)
ME: Thanks. (got that page. Description on that page is like "Visa officer has approved your visa. We need some additional processing and that will take minimum one month, but time varies from person to person… and some phone number for further inquiry")

That's it guys. I saw most of people getting visas. I came out of embassy and I waited 25 minutes and a bus took me back to Convention Centre. I took my mobile back.

Guy's pray for me that I get my passport back soon… other visa officers were saying 2 to 4 weeks but mine said 6 to 8 weeks … I still wonder why it is so …. (Anybody can comment on it, why they increased my time …?)???

Anybody is going to MUM in Feb session??? please contact me.

I tried to be very detailed … but still if you have any question(s) please feel free to contact me.

Re: Interview at US Embassy Islamabad for Student Visa

There are certain tips which need to be considered by visa applicant in order to increase the success chances for availing US Immigration Visa.

-The applicant need to mention the reason of immigration to Visa officer without any hesitation. He should prepare points which can be helpful to satisfy the concern of visa officer.

-Practice the answers for the possible questions to be asked by the visa officer at the time of interview. Take your own time and give the answers to consulate visa officer with confidence and clearly. Repeat the session again and gain which can help in regaining confidence in you which can prove to be fruitful at the time of interview.

-Approach the embassy on time before the start time of interview. Late entry in interview hall creates negative impact in the mind of visa officer. Wish him with a confident smile at the time of first meeting visa officer. There should not be any sign of nervousness, trembling, which can deduct your points. Answer all the questions looking in the eyes o the visa officer.

-The visa applicant need to wear a formal dress at the time of interview with visa officer. As the visa officer is an American, the applicant should come for interview wearing a tie. This creates a positive impact in the mind of visa officer as the Americans always like formal dress up of an individual.
