Admissions readers want you to take the process of writing your statement, or essay, seriously, but there is far more stylistic latitude than the average valedictorian would realize. Here are writing tips to help you craft a winning essay, whether you want to be a Ph.D. in materials science or an M.F.A. in studio sculpture.

Before you write a word you must conduct a survey of your entire academic and personal life to date, to ferret out information that may be pertinent to the admissions decision. You will want to make lists of books, professors, research projects, ideas, and travel that have been important to you. Catalog your employment, elected, social, activity, sport, and volunteer experiences. Be sure to consider special skills, such as foreign or computer languages you have mastered. Register any publications you may have, no matter how obscure. Consider unusual aspects of your family background that may be of interest to admissions readers. Make lists of every single honor, award, credential, or license you have received. Finally, you need to research each targeted school to the limit of your audience. You will not use all this data, of course, but a thorough self-assessment is a very beneficial prelude to crafting an outstanding essay.

Strive for a strong opening line or paragraph. An interesting lead sentence is a gift to your reader. For example, a huge proportion of medical school essays start out with some version of "I always wanted to be a doctor because I like science and I want to help people." Not only is that boring and predictable, but it is ontologically impossible; you have not "always" anything.

Compare the above opening to this: "When the old man urinated on my leg, it ran down my pants and into my shoe. I could not let go of him, as I was holding him up, trying to move him from a wheelchair onto the bed. That's when I realized that medicine was not going to be just starched white lab coats and golf at four..."

Excellent topics for opening lines are: (1) whatever is unique about you, (2) the moment at which you discovered exactly what it is you want to study, (3) a controversial statement about your chosen field, but, of course, not too controversial. Here are some more example openings:

"I made an 'A' in labor relations, but I learned more about labor-management issues in one summer working on a union construction crew than I learned in the class..."

"I am not one of the many students who will tell you that they have wanted to be an attorney since they were born. I was born in the U.S.S.R., and for most of my life becoming an attorney in the United States would have been beyond my ability to conceive. In fact..."

I have seen exciting opening lines for essays for doctoral programs in economics, so no matter how dry your subject matter, you can launch your essay with a little intrigue or at least enthusiasm. (On the other hand, many students report that they cannot conceive of an opening line that is in any way unusual. If you don't hit in a line you love, go with something conservative and get on with the rest of your essay.)

Must include the following things in your Statement of Purpose :
  • Take your undergraduate work seriously.

  • Include work samples.

  • Refer to other parts of your application.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of your future career.

  • Rewrite, edit, and proofread, proofread, proofread.
