The German Education System is separated into several distinct levels as follows:
Elementary school is called Grundschule and is preceded by voluntary Kindergarten which is called Vorschulklassen. Elementary school lasts between four to six years depending on which state the pupil is located in.
There is a wide variety of elementary schools in Germany for parents to choose to send their children to including a local state school in their neighborhood which the vast majority of students go to or alternatively they can go to the Waldorf School which has over 200 schools across Germany, the Montessori method school with over 300 schools, the Freie Alternativschule with 70 schools, a Protestant school with more than 75 locations or Catholic school with more than 130 schools.
Parents must pay extra costs at non-state schools because the German government doesn't cover the full costs of school tuition.
After completing Grundschule (elementary school at approximately 10 years of age there are essentially 4 options for students continuing onto to their secondary schooling and these are as follows:
Hauptschule which is the least academic option is similar to a modernized elementary school. Students can study here until grade 9.
There is Realschule or middle school which goes through until grade 10.
Gymnasium or High School which continues through until grade 12 or 13.
And Gesamtschule which is comprehensive school which includes study elements of all the three options above.
On completion students can start their professional career via an apprenticeship in vocational school called a Berufsschule. The Berufsschule is usually attended 2-3 times a week over a 2-3 year apprenticeship with the remaining days being spent working at a local firm which gives the students practical skills and knowledge. On completion the student can be registered with the national board of trade.
In Germany each of the 16 states are responsible for education in their region with the federal providing financial aid.
In Germany studying English is compulsory in secondary schools. |
